BLACK HISTORY MONTH GRAPHIC - BFS
Every year for Black History Month, ASALH (Association for the Study of African American Life and History) chooses a theme. This year’s theme is “Black Resistance”!
At Black Food and Spirits we believe that the greatest form of Black resistance involves being consistently intentional about supporting Black-made and Black-inspired and spending the powerful Black dollar with Black businesses.
With this goal in mind, here are a few sites to help you do just that:
Eat Black Owned promotes itself as the “Internet’s Largest Directory of Black Owned Restaurants” in the U.S. and abroad.
National Black Guide has listings for a wide variety of Black-Owned businesses.
In Virginia, the Virginia Black Business Directory is free to search and features listings in business categories including products, restaurants, and more. Plus they promote and host great events occurring throughout the year!
Consistently check area listings for events and businesses wherever you are and celebrate Black 24/7/365!

This year, Black Food and Spirits will celebrate Derby Day in honor of the Black Godfathers of Horse Racing. Most people have no idea that the jockey who rode the winning horse at the inaugural Kentucky Derby in 1875 was a Black man, Oliver Lewis, and also that 13 out of 15 jockeys in that first race were Black! Black jockeys dominated the first 28 runnings of the Kentucky Derby but were pushed out as the popularity of horse racing and the money associated with it grew.
On Saturday, May 6, 2023, we will celebrate and honor these amazing men whose accomplishments and impact on horse racing have largely been hidden from history. We will enjoy entertainment, signature cocktails, heavy hors d’oeuvres, a cigar bar, and more at a beautiful secret location!
